One of the most famous sumo wrestlers in Japan is… Bulgarian 🙂
His real name is Kaloyan Mahlyanov and he holds now the highest rank in Japanese sumo. He hates it, but he’s often called „The David Beckham of sumo“.
He is also the first wrestler of European birth to hold the ōzeki rank, and one of only nine non-Japanese to have achieved it.
Kotooshu, accompanied by his wife Asako Ando while receiving the highest Stara Planina order from former President of Bulgaria – Georgi Purvanov.
Most of the Japanese I met link Bulgaria with yoghurt, roses and… Kotooshu 🙂
